“Thanks to our team, not only disabled people but also so many people without any disabilities have changed their perspective towards life and sport.”
“One of our most important aims is to join our disabled people into social life more and not let them feel isolated.”
Among the first actions after the Pamukkale Mayor Hüseyin Gürlesin’s inauguration, Pamukkale Municipality Sports Club’s first active branch has become Wheelchair Basketball. The team has been carrying on its works continuously since 2015.
Founded by the Mayor Gürlesin to let disabled people in the city do sports, the team participated in the Regional A League in its first season. The Pamukkale Municipality Sport Wheelchair Basketball Team performed successfully in 2016-2017 season and they defined the target for this season as placing among the first three.
We have talked about the present situation and the targets of the team with the young Manager of the Pamukkale Municipality Sport Wheelchair Basketball Team Çağdaş Yavuz who has a big part in its success.
What was the purpose of starting the Pamukkale Municipality Sport Wheelchair Basketball Team?
This is the third year of our team. By considering the experiences of the previous years, we have defined our target to be in the first three. However, one of our most important aims is to join our disabled people into social life more and not let them feel isolated.
What does the Pamukkale Municipality Sport Wheelchair Basketball Team mean for the disabled people living in the city?
Actually, we try to create awareness for the disabled people. By making a very important decision, our Pamukkale Mayor Hüseyin Gürlesin has founded the wheelchair basketball team, exemplarily for Turkey. This team has become an instrument for the disabled people living in the city to have a chance to express themselves.
Well, can we know more about you?
I was born in Adana, in 1995. I’m graduated from Pamukkale University Sport Management Department. I have assumed the responsibility of the management of the Pamukkale Municipality Sport Wheelchair Basketball Team. I do my job with love. I’m very glad to see the changes in the lives of our disabled fellows after they have met with sport.
How did you develop the idea of being a coach? What were your targets when you started the duty?
Firstly, the purpose to found our team is to make our society be aware of the disabled people in our city. Our Mayor Gürlesin activated this branch to let the disabled people in our county to have a chance to do sport. Our aim is to create awareness towards the disabled people too.
The ones who come to watch our matches realize the disabled people is very important for us. We want the disabled to see there is no obstacle for them to do sports by watching our sportsmen. We have reached this goal day by day. Thanks to our team, not only the life of disabled people but also the life of so many people without any disabilities have changed.
Who are the players in your team? Are there any national team players among them?
Our team has been together for three years. There are 12 players in our team totally. We are a disciplined team, our pre-season exercises take almost 2.5 moths. There are a lot of national players in our team as well.
Meryem Tan who started basketball 3 seasons ago in this team make a rapid progress and entered for the national teams. Also, the young players Yusuf Emre Bal and Doğan Can Köktaş succeeded to draw the attentions of the national team managers. Our Palestinian player Fadi Aldeeb too is a player that played in his country’s national team. Sending more players to the national team is among our aims in the new seasons.
We will succeed much better in this season. All the people in this team are special. We do whatever we can to make them feel that they are real sportsmen in the trainings 3 days a week.
What would you like to say lastly?
Many thanks to our Pamukkale Mayor Hüseyin Gürlesin for starting this team and for his great support to the disabled people. I invite all the people of Denizli to watch our matches and to support our team as well.
